Ever wanted to tackle a 4×4 route or go camping but didn’t have the right wheels or the outdoor gear for your night under the proverbial stars?
Tread Lite 4×4 Hire paved (and is continuing to pave) the way for travellers just like you when they launched end of 2018 under the slogan and motto, “Everything you need, nothing you don’t.”
With a philosophy of personal growth, to transform communities through job creation and international exposure and to protect the environment through responsible tourism, Tread Lite 4×4 Hire was “founded on the belief in travel to affect positive change.”
On their website, they say:
“Our vehicles (and travel support services), allow you to slow down, connect and discover the wonders of a self-drive vacation through South Africa. With a passion for simplistic, no frills travel, Tread Lite 4×4 hire offers you everything you need for the journey of a life-time, and nothing more. The Suzuki Jimny offers a way of travel for the self-conscious and free spirited traveller.”
I ventured about 2 hours from Cape Town to put Tread Lite 4×4 Hire’s minimalistic approach to the test and explored the World Heritage Site of the Cederberg Wilderness Area; a place known for its interesting rock formations, rooibos and hiking trails, a true escape for nature-lovers, campers, adventurers and those who just want to get away from the city.
If you want to explore the region, read this what-where-when-why post called, Rock and Roll around the Cederberg Mountains.
But in a nutshell, you can look forward to the following when visiting this 71 000 hectare protected area:
- Have a beer at Cederberg Brewery.
- Go winetasting at Cederberg Private Cellar.
- Taste rooibos tea in Citrusdal (Carmien Tea), or at Hebron on the Piekenierskloof Pass.
- Go hiking, there are short stroll and hiking trails that will take up to 8 hours to complete (like the Wolfberg Arch).
- Mountain bikers can enjoy trails at Kromrivier, Dwarsrivier, Cederberg Ridge and Mount Cedar.
- Go stargazing at Cederberg Observatory.

Just keep in mind that there are no ATMs or fuel stations available in the conservancy, winter can get lekker chilly while summer can be scorching hot.
There are a few camp sites available when visiting the Cederberg, and while I opted for Cape Nature’s Algeria camp site that is situated under shady trees on the Rondegat River, there are also a few private camp sites (on farms, etc.) such as: Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve, Driehoek Guest Farm, Enjo Nature Farm, Rondeberg Resort, De Pakhuys, Cederberg Oasis Camping and Houdenbek. Cape Nature also has a variety of self-catering accommodation and chalets, etc. are available at the aforementioned places.

Tread Lite 4×4 Hire rents out Jimnys, perfectly equipped and kitted out for camping and/or off-road adventures and wherever you want to start your journey from, you will be happy to know that they have vehicles available for rent in Cape Town, Johannesburg as well as Durban.

Unlike other car rental companies, you have unlimited mileage, there is a low excess deposit and, you will receive 2GB of onboard wi-fi.
But wait, there’s more!
Do you want to do some mountain biking while you are on vacation? Now you can thanks to their vehicle and mountain bike package (‘Drive Lite, Ride Strong’) that still includes all the camping equipment as well as two 29er hardtail mountain bikes, known as the workhorses of the mountain bike world. Bet you didn’t think that the Jimny would be capable of fitting that as well, hey? The ‘Drive Lite, Ride Strong’ package starts at R1110 per day and it includes mountain bike spares.
Why use a Suzuki Jimny?
The Suzuki Jimny, with its compact body and agile chassis, became a worldwide phenomenon – a 4×4 giant if we may – when Suzuki introduced their first four-wheel drive, the LJ10, back in 1970. And even though the Jimny-brand only penetrated the world market years later, there has been no stop to its progression and fame, all stemming from the seventies.
With Tread Lite 4×4 Hire’s offering of a minimalistic, low-impact 4×4 that is lighter on fuel and producing less C02 emissions with a smaller impact on the environment than other 4x4s, it is no wonder that they chose the Jimny as their vehicle of choice for travellers going on self-drive vacations in and around South Africa.
And if you have ever set foot in a Jimny, regardless if it is an old or a new one, you would know that this vehicle’s off-road capabilities and excellent 4×4 drivetrain far outweighs its size; dynamite really comes in small packages and while other 4x4s still ‘ohh and ahh’ over how to get through and over an obstacle, the Jimny just missions forward. No questions asked, no time for ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ and definitely no interest in breaking a sweat.
What can you find in the Suzuki Jimny of Tread Lite 4×4 Hire?
