There’s a new smell brewing in Port Elizabeth and it comes from Billy Dukes Coffee Bar, a pop-up coffee shop on wheels.
After being in the hospitality industry in Port Elizabeth for over a decade, Siyathemba, entrepreneur, owner and barista at Billy Dukes Coffee Bar, converted a tuk-tuk into a business and says it has been a dream in the making ever since he first started working as a waiter, and later on a food and beverages manager, at some of the Bay’s finest restaurants.
Billy Dukes Coffee Bar has been in operation for about two months now and the menu currently consists of a variety of coffees such as Americano (R15), cappuccino (R20), vanilla cappuccino (R25), single/double espresso (R10/R15), latte (R25) and hazelnut flavoured coffee (R25).
And let me tell you. The Americano I had is what coffee should taste like; filled with flavour, strong with a kick, but not strong that it’s kicking you at the back of your throat.
But that is not all, for those who have already exceeded their caffeine dosage for the day there are also smoothies starting at R30 for a small one and R35 for a bigger one, plus for just R5 extra you have the option to add a scoop of oats or whey protein to your smoothie. He currently whips up a tasty peanut butter and banana smoothie and soon (in about a week or two) his fruit smoothies (made from real fruit) and fruit salads will also be back.
And let me tell you again. My friend ordered the peanut butter and banana smoothie (which is made with plain yoghurt and a dollop of honey), and that thing was the perfect balance of banana and peanut, one not overpowering the other.
One man’s dream is another’s caffeine fix and Siya is currently operating Billy Dukes Coffee Bar from Westbourne Road in front of the Oval Stadium and on Saturdays he is just a bit further up the road in front of the second-hand shop, Joe’s Garage (where you can find vinyl records, turntables and books), also in Westbourne Road. But don’t be surprised if you see him somewhere else too, since his business is on wheels it is also possible for him to move to other locations, go to offices and cater at events.
Everything nowadays is cashless so you‘ll be pleased to know that paying with a card or through the Zapper app is possible at Billy Dukes Coffee Bar.
I’m a big believer in big ideas that have small beginnings and that the crux of the matter is not just to dream big and start small, but to just START. So if you see a tuk-tuk, branded in black and white with the words “BILLY DUKES COFFEE BAR” on the sides and back, somewhere parked on the streets of Port Elizabeth, stop for a quick chat and caffeine fix. You might leave with something more, like I did today; you might leave with a memory of one of your own dreams and get that much needed inspiration and subconscious push to just START.
