If you’re planning a trip to Seoul your itinerary is probably filled with towers, temples and palaces…but how about doing something completely different, without the crowds and completely free of charge. How about searching for Street Art in Hongdae…
Hongdae: Where Seoul carries her heart on her sleeve.
Hongdae is probably the hippest area in Seoul – it’s in this region of the capital where individualism stands out the most. It’s here where art students express themselves, where people gather in funky cafes and find their own rhythm to indie music. It’s here where unique boutiques are hidden in little alleys, where the dress code is eccentric and where you don’t get a lot of “spot the foreigner” stares.
The writing is on the wall in Hongdae
The Street Art in Hongdae adds a whole lot of oomph, colour and life to the ambiance of this artistic district in Seoul. Thought-provoking art pops up around every corner leaving no space untouched. Pillars and walls are covered in graffiti. Windows and doors are sprayed with bright colours. The messages are deep. The pictures are gripping. Artists say their say and other artists splatter their own emotions over that say.
It’s a place where there are no rules – it’s art in its purest form. The Street Art in Hongdae is the voice of all the unspoken words, the medium of the bold, the heart on the sleeve.

Going Somewhere Slowly Tips:
Where to go?
The best place to find the Street Art is around Hongik University. If you stand in front of the University there will be a little flower shop on your right – between the flower shop and the street you’ll find an alleyway filled with art.
When to go?
If you want to get photos without people blocking your shot then the best time to go is early morning while the streets of Hongdae are still quiet.
