Me: “I bought a map.”
My mother: “A map of Korea?”
Me: “No, a map of the world.”
I was not made to sit in one corner of this world. “This heart of mine was made to travel the world” – Unknown.
Travelling can be a greedy affair. My first trip abroad was more than a trip. It was a one year teaching contract in South Korea. I boarded the plane totally uneducated, uncultured and untravelled. One year turned into three years. The countries I’ve visited educated me; the people I’ve met cultured me. I became travelled. Somewhat.
But it was still not enough.
Travelling makes you greedy. It makes you lust after more countries to visit, it makes you desire more cultures to soak in and it makes you glutton to get more educated. You always want more and even when you get more it will still never be enough. There is no antidote for a travel addiction. It is the beautiful compulsive need to never stop exploring and it doesn’t matter how much you’ve experienced or how much you’ve travelled, the fact of the matter is: You will never arrive! It will never be enough.
“Please sir I want some more” – Oliver Twist
When you get that first whiff of a local market, explore a country by yourself, get lost and find your way back again, smell the new ink freshly stamped in your passport, learn a new language, stand in awe of amazing architecture, witness a sunset like no other, immerse in a new culture, try local delicacies and festivals, you are changed forever. And you’ll always want more.
The road is life and after one road you’ll always want to explore another road or even the same road twice.
I still get butterflies in my stomach when I’m arriving at a new place and I get passionate about seeing something familiar with different eyes. Travelling is more than an addiction, it’s a love affair. It’s a love affair not with a specific location, but with a way of life. A way of life that completes you. A way of life that you can’t get enough of – you just want more; more experiences, more closeness, more memories. It’s like the perfect significant other, a partner you’re infatuated with, a captivating lover you want to draw closer and whisper in its ear: “You’re mine forever”.
When travel grabs you by the heart and makes you burn with desire you know; it’s never enough, there will always be more and there will always be a map of the world.
